Lucy Ella Gonzales Parsons, a working-class leader and spouse
of one of the Haymarket martyrs, died March 7, 1942 in Chicago.
File photo.
Lucy
Ella Gonzales was born in Texas in 1853 of African-American, Mexican
and Native-American ancestry. She worked for the Freedmen’s Bureau after
the Civil War. She married Albert Parsons and both fought for
African-American voting rights and against the KKK lynch terror. Threats
forced them to flee Texas and they settled in Chicago in 1873 where
Lucy became a dressmaker and an early organizer of the garment workers’
union. Albert worked for a newspaper until his union activities led to
his dismissal.
Albert Parsons was one of eight labor leaders framed and tried for the Haymarket
bombing, which is generally attributed to a police provocateur. Albert
Parsons wasn’t even present at Haymarket, but was caring for the
couple’s two children while Lucy Parsons was organizing a meeting of
garment workers. After the Haymarket frame-up, Lucy led the campaign to
free her husband.
The late labor history scholar Bill Adelman wrote what is the definitive story of Haymarket. Read it here at the Illinois Labor History Society website.
A paragraph from his description indicates the significance of the event and the horrors that all involved endured:
“The
next day martial law was declared, not just in Chicago but throughout
the nation. Anti-labor governments around the world used the Chicago
incident to crush local union movements. In Chicago, labor leaders were
rounded up, houses were entered without search warrants and union
newspapers were closed down. Eventually eight men, representing a cross
section of the labor movement were selected to be tried. Among them were
(Albert) Parsons and a young carpenter named Louis Lingg, who was
accused of throwing the bomb. Lingg had witnesses to prove he was over a
mile away at the time. The two-month-long trial ranks as one of the
most notorious in American history. The Chicago Tribune even offered to
pay money to the jury if it found the eight men guilty.”
Albert Parson
was one of eight who were convicted and one of four hanged on November
11, 1887. In June of 1893, Illinois Governor John P. Altgeld pardoned
the 3 men still alive and condemned the entire judicial system that had
allowed this injustice. They are honored with a monument at Waldheim
Cemetery, which Lucy Parsons led the fight to erect. (Her grave is
located a few feet from the monument.)
Lucy Parsons, file photo
Lucy
Parsons spent her life fighting for worker’s rights, civil liberties
and against racism while raising their children after her husband’s
execution. Her politics have been variously described as radical,
socialist, anarchist and communist. She became involved in the
International Labor Defense, fought for the freedom of Sacco and
Vanzetti, Tom Mooney and the Scottsboro Nine.
She led many demonstrations of the unemployed, homeless and hungry, including a memorable 1915 Poor People’s March of the Unemployed of over 15,000 people in Chicago on January 17, 1915, where “Solidarity Forever” was sung for the first time. IWW songwriter Ralph Chaplin had finished writing “Solidarity Forever” two days prior. Marchers demanded relief from hunger and high levels of unemployment.
The
demonstration also persuaded the American Federation of Labor, the Jane
Addams’ Hull House, and the Socialist Party to participate in a
subsequent, huge demonstration on February 12, 1915
For
years Lucy Parsons was harassed by the Chicago Police Department, who
often arrested her on phony charges to prevent her from speaking at mass
meetings. Following her death in a suspicious fire at her home, the
police and FBI confiscated all her personal papers and writings. But her
fighting spirit and contributions to making this a better world will
not be forgotten.

Hi
all - I hope you had a good weekend. I know many of us have already
been tracking the news closely, but I wanted to share an important
refugee update.
On Friday, April 16, the Biden administration announced
that it will keep the historic-low refugee admissions goal of 15,000
in place for this fiscal year, despite promising to raise the goal to 62,500. Although the administration restored regional
allocations based on vulnerability and undid
the previous administration’s discriminatory resettlement allocations,
thousands of refugees will be left in harm’s way by leaving the current
all-time low admissions goal intact. Due to
the delay in announcing this decision, thousands of refugees who were
ready for travel to the United States have seen their medical and
security checks start to expire, forcing refugees to now have to wait
months or years to be resettled and reunited with their
loved ones.
Later that Friday, the White House issued
another statement, backtracking its earlier announcement and indicating
the administration’s plans to re-issue a new, higher admissions goal by
May 15th. A White House official told
the New York Times that the decision to
maintain the 15,000 admissions goal was due to concerns over increases
in unaccompanied migrant children seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico
border. It is important to note that there was no
reason for the delay in restoring regional allocations and there is no reason to delay increasing the refugee admissions goal.
While we welcome the administration reconsidering their wrongful
decision to continue the historic-low admissions goal, however,
if they truly wanted to, they could increase that goal today. The
administration said they wanted to rebuild the resettlement program, all
they need to do to make that happen is to re-issue the admissions goal
for FY21 of 62,500—as they proposed and consulted
with Congress around—and increase refugee arrivals, so they can mitigate
the harm this delay has had on refugees and their loved ones.
Now
is the time to keep up the pressure. It is vital that the
administration and Members of Congress hear that we are outraged by this
historic-low refugee admissions goal
and to re-issue the admissions goal of 62,500 for FY21. Here are the top 5 ways to take action:

LA Times Op-Ed: Reclaim America’s moral voice by welcoming refugees to our shores
I will never forget
the little girl from Pakistan who, with her parents, was resettled in
this country with the help of one of our United Methodist congregations.
Aaima and her family were attending a Sunday service in 2013 at All
Saints Church in Peshawar, Pakistan, when terrorist bombs exploded
at the site, killing her two older siblings and her grandmother, along
with many church members. This family had faced a life of persecution
for being part of a religious minority even before
that horrific tragedy.
Their resettlement in
Claremont gave them a chance to build a new life. They quickly became
involved in the church that welcomed them. While the church supported
them in their resettlement, Aaima — the most joyful
and loving spirit — and her family brought renewal to the church,
teaching us about courage, faith and love. Under the Trump
administration, however, this mutual gift was rejected and nearly
destroyed.
Over four deeply painful
and divisive years, President Trump did his best to dismantle a
40-year-old federal program and a longstanding commitment to welcoming
refugees to the United States. By his last year in
the White House, his administration had reduced the refugee resettlement
admissions goal to 15,000
a year — a historic low, down from an average admissions goal of 95,000
a year.
This is a reflection of
our abysmal commitment to refugees. It leaves thousands of families and
children like Aaima abandoned in life-threatening circumstances,
stranded in refugee camps, and forgotten in a global
pandemic. Millions of refugees are in desperate need of protection and
hope.
President Biden has
spoken to that hope by announcing his commitment to reinvigorate the
refugee resettlement program. His administration has said it would raise
the resettlement goal in its first full fiscal
year in office to 125,000 and proposed increasing the current year’s goal to 62,500.
But despite that promise, the president on Friday signed
a new presidential determination leaving the refugee admissions goal
for the remainder of this fiscal year at 15,000. While he did remove
several harmful resettlement categories, his order will leave many
refugees who have been vetted and approved to travel
to the United States in harm’s way. After receiving immediate
criticism, the White House said it would increase the cap next month, but did not give details.
People of faith and
goodwill in this country stand ready to help those who face violence and
death and see America as their chance for safety and a real future. But
none of this will happen unless the Biden administration
quickly lifts the cap and opens the door to more refugees waiting in
line.
Worldwide, nearly 80
million people have been displaced from their homes. Of those, 29 million — half
of whom are children — are refugees who have been forced out of
their countries and need a safe, permanent home. Many have been subject
to vicious persecution because of their race, religion, nationality,
membership in a particular social group or their
political opinion. The Holocaust, the Rwandan and Cambodian genocides,
the civil war in Syria, the political instability in Myanmar, and other
moments of life-destroying violence, continue to teach us how critically
important it is to protect those fleeing
from oppression and tyranny.
The United States was
once recognized in the world for extending protection to refugees, but
our moral leadership on this front has been lost in political warfare
and the rise of white supremacy, white nationalism
and xenophobia, all emboldened by Trump. It is time to reclaim America’s
moral voice.
Over the last year,
communities of faith across the country have encouraged local and state
officials to register their commitment to serving refugees. In August,
540 state and local elected officials from all 50 states came forth to
state their support for refugee resettlement in their communities.
The opportunity to save
lives, extend hospitality to new neighbors, and invite new members into
our churches, synagogues and mosques, renews our own spirits with hope
in the restoration of life.
As Christians, we
believe that in welcoming the refugee we are fulfilling the work of our
faith. I hope that Biden acts on the immediacy of this need and makes
the spirit of welcome his guiding principle.
